I mean, we didn't go back to bein' test subjects after that, at least, so we escaped that much.

Joined the army once we were old enough. Count Louis brought us into his private forces sometime after that, and we eventually ended up his top officers.

Stepped away from that in the end, though.

...Complicated, but more the latter. Thought he was dead and that we were free to go.

I would not consider that deserting, but army people always seem to have different thinking.
